James Bond’s Daily Routine

People inquire about my writing style. One of my influences is Ian Fleming. I’ve read all the original James Bond novels. Fleming relished the specifics of 007’s tastes, habits, and routines, whether at home in his converted Regency flat in London or on assignment. This framework for his daily routine is based on those details.

If you’d like to know more about Bond from the author himself, you must read the detailed interview Fleming gave to Playboy in the December 1964 issue.

James Bond: A Life in a Day

Workout: Breathe deeply while doing 20 slow push-ups, straight leg lifts to failure, 20 toe touches, and a series of arms and chest exercises.

Groom: Shower with an old-school bar of soap (Pears Transparent). The shower should be very hot, then very cold. The cold bit needs to last 5 minutes. Shave with a double-sided razor. Comb hair with 5T Dressing Table Comb from G B Kent & Sons Ltd. Apply Floris No.89 aftershave.

Clothes: Dress in white cotton underwear, dark blue socks, white cotton shirt, dark blue suit, black knitted tie (no pin), black leather belt, hand-stitched black moccasin shoes (no shoelaces) and a wristwatch. Add a navy Burberry trench coat if it’s raining.

Breakfast: Eggs with finely chopped chives or fresh herbs, bacon, toast, two cups of black Turkish coffee – occasionally spiked with whiskey – and half a pint of orange juice.

Lunch: Most basic and flexible meal. Often seafood or smoked salmon or just a simple ham and mustard sandwich.

Leisure Time: Should be spent driving a Bentley (books) / Aston Martin (films) really fast, playing golf, gambling, or having affairs with married women. Occasionally read a mission-specific manual or detective thriller.

Dinner: Drinks before, obviously. Vodka martini or bourbon on the rocks. Eat mostly steak, lamb cutlets, or broiled lobster. Caviar appetizer if it’s available. Champagne throughout. Finish with black coffee and brandy.

Smoke about 60 cigarettes throughout the day.
